A Family Story

The Jgerenaia Family

Nestled in the village of Gurdzemi near Martvili, the Jgerenaias are the heart of Gulsunda — local hosts, gifted cooks and proud keepers of Megrelian tradition.

The Jgerenaias are not performers playing a role for tourists - they are a real Megrelian family rooted in the soil of Gurdzemi. Everything on their table comes from their own land: sun-ripened fruit, seasonal vegetables, herbs gathered from the garden and recipes passed down through generations.

Mtvarisa is the soul of the household. Alongside her husband and four children, she has turned her home into a place where strangers arrive as guests and leave as friends. The food is simple, honest and extraordinarily good - cooked with the kind of instinct that only comes from a lifetime of feeding the people you love.

Their family farm is a living part of the landscape, not a stage set. Visitors wander through orchards, taste fruit straight from the branch and watch the seasons change the rhythm of daily life. It is slow, natural and deeply human - the opposite of a packaged excursion.

The Jgerenaias also have their own oda at Gulsunda, where they share the flavours of Samegrelo in a setting that feels both timeless and alive. Expect generous plates, unexpected conversations and the warmth of people who genuinely love what they do.
